Position Title

R&D Engineer - Mechanical (Thermal)

POSITION SUMMARY

The candidate would be part of the TWMC power electronics team working on Medium Voltage drives (MVDs), such as VersaBridge, as well as full systems for motor control and other power applications. The VersaBridge is a patented MVD designed utilizing a multilevel H-Bridge topology that reduces the harmonic levels to extremely low levels. The modular design facilitates ease of installation, commissioning, and maintenance. The VersaBridge is an innovative product that combines reliable, simple, and compact solutions with the latest power electronics and cooling technologies.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, test and implement thermal management solutions for the medium voltage drives product line. Subject matter expert for all aspects of the drive cooling system, components, and control.
  • Setup and conduct thermal tests. Work with sensors and other data acquisition and control instrumentation to collect test data.
  • Develop software for thermal tests, data analysis, and related applications.
  • Analyzes and correlates thermal data to theoretical calculations and communicates findings.
  • Develops test plans and procedures. Prepare technical test reports, manuals and presentations.
  • Develops cooling system/component specifications and work with vendors to obtain optimized solutions.
  • Troubleshoot cooling issues on site as well as issues seen in the field. This will require expert level knowledge with two phase cooling principles and devices.
  • Models system performance and solves thermal issues through analysis. Supports drive development by providing thermal analysis in the form of hand calculations, Excel spreadsheets and finite element analysis.
  • Develops fluid flow control systems. Ability to develop software based algorithms for the control of multi-phase cooling systems.
  • Work directly with other engineers including mechanical, electrical, and embedded hardware designers.
  • Work with customers, manufacturing, and field service engineers .
  • Operate and test medium voltage, high power inverter.
  • Other functions as required (non-essential functions).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and five to ten years in field of specialization; or equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
  • Experience in industrial/commercial equipment fabrication. Ability to apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to make designs more robust and affordable.
  • Knowledge of UL standards and the certification process particularly as applicable to Medium Voltage equipment.
  • Possesses strong background in machine design. Experience with sheet metal design particularly with electrical enclosures, cabinets and electrical panels. Experience with GDT. Has worked cradle to grave design projects, concept through documentation and test. Background in CAD design particularly with SolidWorks.
  • Working knowledge and experience in at least one programming language such as Java, Python, LabVIEW, or similar.
  • Knowledge of refrigerants and refrigerant properties. Experience in refrigerant handling.
  • Experience in CFD analysis particularly with Icepak and/or Fluent.
  • Strong team player.
  • Great communication and presentation skills.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low.
